He tends to keep to his thoughts and ways, but his articles make up for his lack of “voice.” Meet our 2023-2024 senior Opinion Editor, Keegan Bukovatz.
Bukovatz has been on staff since the beginning of his junior year and started as a reporter. During the spring semester of the 2022-2023 school year, he and Liz Eike became Sports Editor to fill the empty position.
“I took J1 (Journalism One), and I liked it, so I took J2 (Magazine),” Bukovatz said.
Bukovatz is always down to give a thought or a critique to a story, photo, or spread to ensure everyone’s work is the best it can be. With being a member of magazine, it gives him the ability to write about topics and opinions that might not be covered by other high school journalism stations.
“I like the freedom it brings, and I like being able to write about controversial topics and making people mad,” Bukovatz said.
With his extensive writing skills and love for making people “mad,” Bukovatz had a tough time picking just one favorite story he has written during his time with the Kickapoo High Quarterly (KHQ). He has had the opportunity to interview a well-known figure that was in the news a few years prior and getting the rights to using the photos from Netflix.
“My favorite story is either ‘2A is Here To Stay’ because I got to interview Mark McCloskey, a somewhat famous guy when it comes to second amendment rights. The other one is ‘OBX3 Review’ because I got rights from Netflix to use photos from Outer Banks to review the show. It was also a well-written review, so I am proud of that one as well,” Bukovatz said.
Since being on staff, he has published nine print articles within the KHQ and eight online stories. A good majority of his stories focus on sports or opinion. If he’s not writing, he’s likely rooting for the Cleveland Browns or spending time with his close friends and family.
“I like to hang out with friends and my family,” Bukovatz said.
While he might not have a job title or position outside of school, he loves to help run his dad’s company.
“I don’t have an official job right now, but I do work for my dad and help him run his online business,” Bukozatz said.
While the days slowly dwindle and May approaches, Keegan has plans to stay local and get a degree within the 417 area.
“I am going to OTC, and I have plans to become a digital marketer,” Bukovatz said.
If you need help promoting a business, advertisement, or something local, hit up Keegan Bukovatz in the upcoming years. He’s been an amazing editor for us this school year and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for Bukovatz!
