Deep cleaning and reorganizing may seem overwhelming to many; however, if kept simple and orderly, you will be able to get an effective job done. Here are some tips and tricks to have a productive spring cleaning time.
General Tips
Tip #1: Make a plan/schedule.
It sounds silly, but planning out what days you are going to clean will help you stay organized and not get sidetracked. By doing this, it may also help relieve stress. Knowing that you are only cleaning your closet today and tomorrow you can tackle the bathroom, helps you to focus solely on the task at hand and not think about what you need to clean next.
Tip #2: Good music or podcasts.
If you have a good podcast or playlist to listen to, this will make the spring cleaning process all the better. Audiobooks can be another entertainment source while you spring clean.
Tip #3: Don’t overlook anything.
There are many spaces that you may not think about when cleaning. Here is a list of some spaces you should not overlook.
- Shower curtains
- Clogged drains
- Baseboards
- Crevices in bathrooms
- Wiping out drawers
- Dusting shelves, fans or anything hanging on the wall.
Living Spaces
Bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms are the places that may be overlooked to clean and tidy during a busy week. Spring is the perfect opportunity to spend some time cleaning and organizing these spaces. By having a clean and organized house and living space, your life will be more calm and easygoing.
Tip #4: Always have a trash bag handy.
When deep cleaning, you may never know what you are going to find. Always have a trash bag ready to dispose of unneeded junk or trash.
Tip #5: Don’t overcomplicate things.
You don’t need fancy products to get an effective cleaning job done. Go to the grocery store and buy all the cleaning supplies that you need. Stock up on multiple Clorox wipes and bottles of disinfectant sprays, such as Windex and surface cleaners.
Tip #6: Reduce and Reuse!
Many of the Tik Tok cleaning ASMR videos show influencers buying expensive plastic containers to organize all of their things. The finished product of their organizing job always looks sleek and clean. However, to have organized spaces, you don’t need to go buy these expensive plastic containers. Instead, you can kill two birds with one stone. Go clean out your Tupperware drawer. Look for anything that is gross or worn out. You can take this old Tupperware and use it to organize all your things.
You can also cut the lids off of old tissue boxes, leaving you with a perfect sized bin. Old shoe boxes will work as well. This will help you to have more organized spaces as well as saving your money and the planet.
Closet
If you decide to tackle the task of cleaning out your closet, there are numerous tips and tricks to make this process seem less daunting and more therapeutic.
Tip #7: Take pictures.
Now this tip does not pertain to the actual act of cleaning per say, but it will help you to see the results of your work. Take before and after pictures of everything you clean or reorganize. Doing this will let you see how much you clean and it will help you to feel successful.
Tip #8: Take everything out, and I mean EVERYTHING.
When cleaning out your closet, to be successful and proactive, you must take all your clothes out. Put all your clothes out visually for you to see what you need or don’t need.
Tip #9: Create an off-season bucket.
To help increase the space in your closet, if you haven’t already, create a bucket to put all of your bulky off-season clothes in. This will greatly help you to save some space in your closet.
Tip #10: Think critically about what you should keep.
As you go through the process of deciding what to keep or what to throw, think, “When was the last time I wore this? Do I see myself wearing this sometime next week?” If you cannot see yourself wearing something in your closet soon, you should not keep it. Saying, “Oh, I’ll wear that to church or dinner sometime,” should tell you that you are not thinking of wearing it soon, thus taking up space in your closet.
Tip #11: Nostalgia is difficult.
Clothes hold memories. Getting rid of clothes that have a lot of wear and memories may be difficult. But to truly have a clean closet you need to get rid of clothes you don’t need. The clothes you hold on to for nostalgic purposes will be taking up space for new clothes.
Tip #12: Don’t go buy clothes.
Once you have cleaned out the clothes you need and don’t you may feel the urge to go fill the gaps with new clothes. Try to leave your closet empty for a few days. This will help you see what new clothing items you need, instead of impulsively buying a bunch of new clothes. This is a practice in patience and will help you to make more thoughtful purchases.
In following these tips, you are ensuring yourself an effective and relaxed spring cleaning time.
