During lunch on November 19 a slide was projected for students to read, titled “No Tardies = Chief Bucks (Chucks)” It outlined that if students have zero tardies from November 20 to December 17, they will receive a Chuck and can choose to enter a drawing.
They can choose to enter a drawing from a variety of prizes; AirPod 4s, a Stanley cup,100 dollar Amazon gift card, 100 dollar Lululemon gift card, 25 dollar gas gift cards, and a 25 dollar Starbucks gift card.
Drawings are from December 18 to 19 and the winners will be announced December 20. Leslie Helfrecht, an assistant principal at our school, helped organize this new incentive for students. On Chucks, students write down their name and ID number and then they can choose the prize they would like to enter a raffle for by placing their Chucks in the bucket.
“We tried to think of something simple and fun that offers big rewards,” Helfrecht said.
Helfrecht and administration hope that this will encourage students to avoid being tardy to class.
“So part of the initiative that’s across the whole district is to reinforce behavior in a positive way. So we thought this quarter we would focus on tardies,” Helfrecht said.
Our school’s administration believes that being tardy is one of the things that negatively affects students’ education the most.
“Frequent tardiness and a large number of tardies add up to discipline and time out of class and that takes away from academic time. It impacts students academically but it also impacts our overall attendance percentage. In the tardy window students can miss important things and teachers have to catch them up. It interrupts the general flow of the day,” Helfrecht said.
Helfrecht hopes that our school can continue Chuck incentives.
“Next semester we are still going to be doing a similar incentive. But instead, teachers will have Chief Bucks to hand out to students demonstrating good behavior,” Helfrecht said.
Hopefully Chucks will give students an incentive to come to school on time, which will improve their academic performance. Throughout this year, Chucks will become a known part of our school’s culture. Although it is an up and coming program, Chucks will integrate nicely into our school’s environment.
