Many students may be fearful of the impacts of climate change on our environment. However, there are various things that we can do to save our environment and the world we live in and our school’s Environmental Club is doing just that. This year, the Environmental Club has done three main projects, these include: Making sleeping mats out of recycled bags, creating plant terrariums and bird houses, as well as planting buckwheat outside.
Every other Monday, the Environmental Club will meet in Mrs Lamperts room and do one of these activities.
Sophomore Kyra Gibbons said, “I joined at first because my brother and his girlfriend did it and I started to enjoy the stuff the environmental club did.”
The biggest project that the Environmental Club did this year was creating mats for homeless people.
“We took plastic bags and we made them into plastic yarn, and then we weaved them into mats. These mats were for the homeless,” Senior Ashley Bryant said.
Bryant also mentioned that they created plant terrariums in recycled water bottle cups. “This was so fun and such a cute project,” Bryant said.
Creating these mats out of recycled plastic bags not only eliminates waste from the environment, but helps the homeless.
Currently, the environmental club is cleaning out our rain garden. They are hoping to plant more native species in the rain garden for next year. Now that summer and warmer weather is here, it will be easier to grow more native species to benefit our school’s grounds.
“I think it is important because it cleans up the school and makes it look nice. We get to learn about nature and be involved,” Bryant said.
If you are interested in these projects, join the Environmental Club next school year. They meet every other Monday in room S104 after school.
