Over 600 students competed in the Science Day held at Pittsburg State University, 50 of whom represented our school. 46 medals in total were received across the schools, and 16 of those medals came home with the students from our school.
Science day consisted of multiple events such as Rock Recognition, Wildlife Identification, Biology Trivia, Anatomy and Physiology, Team Chemistry events, Mouse Trap Cars, and more.
Students spent many hours preparing for these events by studying or creating their project that would be entered.
Senior Bella Cook studied heavily to win 1st place in both Rock Recognition and Astronomical Shuffle events.
“I did Rock Recognition last year and I did not place. It felt really good to study for a long time and become really familiar with the rocks and actually get first place,” Cook said.
The students took home eight first-place medals.
Andrew Patrias, Richard Le, -Tied for first- Anatomy and Physiology.
Ash Mendelsohn, first place, Wildlife ID.
Bella Cook, first place, Astronomical Shuffle and Rock Recognition.
Ni Hnem, Joyce Chen, Leah Martin, Annie Barbara, first place Mars Colony.
Brayden Rubidoux, Brock Thompson, first place Paper Tower.
Andrew Patrias, Leah Martin, Richard Le, Toby Adepoju, first place Physics Face-Off.
“This time of year, teachers and students get worn down, so when you go to a competition like that where you are competing in all areas of science, it’s not only rewarding to me, but to our whole science department,” Science Day sponsor and teacher Justin Drane said.
