Being a part of a high school sports team is beneficial in so many ways. You learn teamwork, responsibility, resilience, and much more.
One of the things that makes girls golf stand out amongst other sports is how much they pour into team bonding. Not only do they go out and practice almost every day, but they invest their time growing closer to one another.
“The team bonding has made my relationships with the girls so much better because you get to step aside from your sport and realize we are all student athletes with the same goals,” Sophomore Elsie Duff said.
The golf team usually meets at local places like Orange Leaf or Texas Road House, and their growth as a team displays how anyone can come together as a family.
“Golf is such a mental game and can sometimes bring out the worst in you, which is why it’s so important to have a solid group of friends that can remind you of what your true purpose is,” Duff said.
When joining any sport, you have to understand that you are held to a higher standard, which comes with more stress and anxiety. Developing good relationships with your coaches and teammates can help you look past hardships and remember your love for the sport.
“My sophomore year I got really close with the team captain at that time, Ellie Guthrie. She helped me with improving my skills, plus I knew I could always ask her for help. If I hadn’t joined the girls golf team, I probably wouldn’t have a lot of the close friendships I have today,” Senior Lewellyn Hudson said.
The girls on the golf team and coach Drane do a great job showing how the little things, like going out for ice cream with each other after a game, can make a huge difference.
Another way the girls bond throughout the season is after every tournament or match, they gather together to share their best shot of the day. This helps them have something to look forward to and get to be proud of their accomplishments.
Joining a team sport in high school is one of the best ways to get involved in your school and make friends. The golf team shows their commitment and dedication not only by focusing on performance, but by making sure their teammates are getting the tools they need to succeed in school, golf, and their future.
