Black licorice, a candy hated and loathed by many but not me. Black Licorice is one of my favorite candies, given its complicated and strong flavor, combined with benefits hidden under the black exterior.
I also find black licorice as a type of medicine, providing small improvements to my day-to-day life.
Black licorice is an allergy reliever, for me it clears nasal congestion, headaches, and even a sore throat. This is something that I find difficult to achieve with common medicines like nasal spray.
Additionally black licorice candy has proven medicinal benefits. The American Heart Association states that the root itself, Glycyrrhiza Glabra, can have health complications from a chemical called Glycyrrhizin, in the short term however, consuming less than 250 grams in 7 days is usually considered healthy.
The benefits of black licorice candies stem from two ingredients, the aforementioned Glycyrrhizin, and Anise oil, a common extract used to mimic the flavor of black licorice. An article from the International Journal of Basic and Clinical Studies supported that, in minimal consumption, licorice can improve oral health with anti-bacterial/microbial properties, and retains anti-inflammatory aspects.
Both Glycyrrhizin and Anise oil share similar properties and the most favorable ones in my eyes, to the oral and respiratory system. The strong smell, flavor, and microbial properties mean these two chemicals improve oral health, and in my case widens and decreases mucus production, clearing a stuffy nose nearly instantly.
Another reason why black licorice is the best candy is the flavor. Many just spit the foul tasting candy out the second they taste it, an act of the body’s natural defenses. However, if they went back for another bite, over time its flavor becomes richer and less tart, giving an earthy and overwhelming sweetness and complex flavor that can’t be found in any other candy.
The best candy isn’t the one everyone likes, it’s the one that’s the most overlooked, and talked down upon.
