Going undefeated in any respective sport typically means that that team will make some sort of postseason, right? When it comes to college football, going undefeated is not always a guaranteed playoff spot.
The College Football Playoff (CFP) Committee’s announcement of the four teams selected for the postseason certainly sent shockwaves through the fans of college football and it wasn’t the four teams selected that got people talking, but rather the two that weren’t included: the undefeated Florida St. Seminoles and the 12-1 Georgia Bulldogs.
The four teams that were included – the Michigan Wolverines, Washington Huskies, Texas Longhorns and Alabama Crimson Tide – all boast great records, but two are not as winning as the Seminoles 13-0 record. Both the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide held 12-1 records, the same as the Bulldogs, who were also excluded.
The previously Number Two ranked Bulldogs played their final game of the regular season against Alabama, in a 27-24 loss that dropped the Bulldogs out of the top two for the first time in the season.
Many people were upset with the Bulldogs’ exclusion from the playoffs, considering their 12-1 record looked slightly better than both the Longhorns’ and the Crimson Tide.
Many fans expressed their disappointment with the Committee’s decision to exclude Georgia, but many more were disappointed with the decision to exclude Florida St.
The Seminoles are the first undefeated team from a major Power-5 conference to be excluded from the playoffs since its inception in 2014.
According to the College Football Committee, the decision is made based upon a series of factors, one of which includes “unavailability of key players.”
This is definitely a sentiment that a good chunk of people share as well. Jordan Travis, the Seminole’s star quarterback, was injured in one of the final weeks of the season. The injury prompted the team to struggle in its final two games, the more upsetting one being the measly 16-6 win against Louisville, a team the Seminoles should’ve easily taken care of.
But even still, many people still think Florida St. should’ve at least been given the opportunity to have a crack at competing with the other teams.
Thankfully, this issue will hopefully be fixed next season with the expansion of the CFP to include 12 teams.
