Football:
In this popular sport, the goal of the game is to earn the most points by the end of the fourth quarter. Points are gained through touchdowns. A touchdown is worth six points and happens when a player runs or catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone. After a touchdown, teams can attempt a field goal for two more extra points. A field goal is when the kicker on the team successfully kicks the football through the goal in the endzone.
During the game, each team has 11 players on the field. They are either offensive or defensive players, depending on whether or not their team has control of the ball. Each team has four downs, or plays, to advance ten yards and get another set of downs.
Softball:
Nine players on two teams compete against each other to have the most number of players to round the bases and touch home plate, also known as a run, than the other. The teams take turns batting and switching when the defensive team gets three outs. Outs happen when a batter gets three strikes or if a base or player is tagged with the ball before the runner can reach said base.
When a player is up to bat, they try to hit the ball when the pitcher throws it in the “strike zone”, or the area between the armpits and knees. If this is successfully done, they will run as many bases as possible without getting tagged with the ball by the opposing team. This process repeats with the next batter.
In the middle of the infield is the pitcher’s mound where the pitcher throws the ball underhanded to the batter.
Behind the batter and home plate sits the catcher, who is responsible for catching and calling what pitch is thrown. Each of the three bases has a baseman who stays near their respective plates and works to get base runners out. There are also players in between each base and three players in the outfield to catch hard-hit balls.
Swimming:
This aquatic sport is much more individually focused. Members swim in lanes separated by rope from one end of a pool to the other to attempt to reach the fastest time to place well. Swimmers compete in many different swimming styles, such as freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Freestyle is the least restrictive allowing competitors to swim any style. Backstroke requires athletes to swim on their backs. The swimmers’ arms go up and back behind them as they swim. Breaststroke has swimmers on their chests as they push their hands forward together and then kicking. Butterfly stroke involves both arms moving symmetrically while lying on the stomach.
The main rules of swim include, not being allowed to push themselves using the bottom of the pool and having to touch the other side of the pool with both hands before swimming back.
Golf:
Girls’ golf is currently in gear this season. In this sport, players aim to score the fewest points when using a golf club to swing a small textured ball into a hole on a course. Each hole has a set par, which is the number of strokes it should take for the player to get the ball in the hole. Every extra swing after that adds a point to their score, which they do not want. Most courses usually consist of 18 holes, but some have more or less, with varied lengths.
