Mrs. Bright-Kaufman (BK)
What is your favorite Kickapoo memory?
“There are a lot of wonderful memories, but one that I’ll never forget is when, in the middle of teaching The Scarlet Letter, a table of great boys came in with a two-liter bottle of Dr. Pepper and a bunch of shot glasses. I didn’t think anything of it since kids could have food/drinks in my room. But as I’m going through the lesson, I notice that they’re taking shots of Dr. Pepper in unison. I couldn’t figure it out. Eventually, it dawned on me . . . every time I said the word “symbolism” (and in The Scarlet Letter, it’s said a LOT), they took a shot of Dr. Pepper. It took us a good 45 minutes to figure it out. The tears were rolling we laughed so hard. At the end of the semester, they gave me a gift: a shot glass with the word “symbolism” on it. PS: Can I include a 2nd memory? It’s how I got the name “BK.” I was a teacher on a cart the first two years I was here, teaching each block in a different classroom. When I pulled into one particular classroom each day, the kids wrote on the board: “Welcome to the BK Lounge.” And it stuck.”
Who is a staff member you are sad to be leaving?
“I’m going to miss a lot of people and it’s difficult to narrow it down to one: I’ll miss my colleagues, Sydney Dean and Makayla Jordan for providing laughs and sanity every day at lunch. I’ll miss Dianna Bernhard for always having a shoulder I can lean on. And I’ll miss Karen Davis, who is a true miracle worker and made my job look easy.”
What is one thing you are going to miss about Kickapoo?
“This question is easy to answer: I’m going to miss my kids. For 15 years, they have been a joy in my life. I’ve had the privilege of watching them grow into amazing men and women, enter exciting careers, attended marriages, and visited their newborn children. There will definitely be a void there.”
