Everyone has seen those posts at least once, the posts where someone gets the cutest Homecoming dance proposal sign. However, In February our school hosts another dance to celebrate Valentine’s Day and to give everyone a chance to ask someone special. It is my mission to give the best tips and tricks to creating some of the best proposal signs that WILL get posted on Instagram.
Step 1: To start off you need to brainstorm ideas. These proposals can’t just be thrown together quickly with no ambition or thought behind it. Think of the person you are asking to the dance, what do they like? Think of certain activities or hobbies they love. It is also important to think about their personality type. This information will give you the ability to find the perfect theme for a poster, whether it be a joke about being a bad cook or a theme based on their favorite movie quote. It can be whatever you make of it!
Step 2: Once you decide your theme you need to decide how you will execute this plan. Do you want the poster to be funny and cute, dramatic and adventurous, or romantic and mysterious? This idea goes hand in hand with the person’s personality traits. If you are asking out a bubbly and sweet girl your poster should have the same vibe. Or if you are asking out a sporty and serious guy make it more relaxed and subtle. Once you decide the theme and the vibe to your poster you need to brainstorm the look of it in your head. Pink bubble letters with flowers or cursive black letters with footballs.
Step 3: Now it is time for a very important step, making it come to life! You will obviously need to purchase a poster board from a place like Staples or even Walgreens and select your markers wisely. Once you have these materials it is time to decide if you want to draw designs around the words or if you want to print out photos. There is a possibility of also needing glue or tape. Deciding to print out photos, you would then need to surf the internet and find pictures that correspond to the theme of your poster.
Step 4: You have finally made it to the best part of the whole process, decorating! Try to write your proposal in the best handwriting that you can muster up, and make it romantic. Don’t just write “Will you go out with me” and call it a day. Use what they love to incorporate a cute and catchy saying. If they love music you could write something along the lines of “Set the headphones down for tonight and dance with me instead”. If your poster sounds corny that is okay, that means this step is working.
Step 5: (Optional) Step five is optional depending on your budget. This step includes adding a gift or token that really brightens up the proposal. These little gifts could include flowers that match the color of your sign, a stuffed animal that goes hand in hand with your theme, or even a type of snack or candy. Your proposal can still be amazing and successful without this step but if you can include it you should.
Step 6: We have finally made it to the final step, and by far the scariest step. It is time to give the poster to them! Don’t you dare text “here” and wait for them to awkwardly walk outside, that ruins everything. Walk up to your special person’s door and knock despite how nervous you are. When they hug you and say yes you can thank me.
