Junior Sarah Trotman and Senior Ellie Guthrie are our school’s golf state qualifiers. State competition this year will be held in Bolivar, Missouri at Silo Ridge Country Club on October 16 and 17.
Trotman and Guthrie were the only girls at our school to have a score to qualify for state. Qualifiers were held at Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course located here in Springfield.
To qualify for the state tournament competitors must shoot below a certain score, normally the cut line ranges from 95-96. However, this year it was 92, which according to Trotman and Guthrie is very low compared to previous years. The lowest scores are eligible to qualify. Trotman placed fifth at qualifiers this year with a score of 78, and Gutherie placed in the top 15 with a score of 88.
“I was very nervous going into districts (qualifiers). We had a competitive field this year and I knew it would be close,” Guthrie said.
After seeing the results of the district competition, the girls became more confident that their victory was soon to come.
“We had a four-hour rain delay, so we were super nervous about how the day would go, but the two of us ended up doing really well,” Trotman said.
Kickapoo placed fourth overall in districts, but only the top two school teams go to the state so Trotman and Guthrie went as individual competitors.
State competition is on 10/16 and 10/17, more information on scores and results will be updated soon.
UPDATE: After the competition Guthrie scored a 95 on the first day, and a 101 on the second day. Trotman scored an 82 the first day and a 90 the second day. The girls beat some tough winds and put their best effort into the entire competition.
