Multiple clubs and sports can be seen in the news, most prominently basketball, football, and the other big sports out there. But what about the unpopular sports?
Archery is a fairly underground sport. Usually around spring break, they come home with a state championship trophy, and somehow, nobody knows about it.
The club doesn’t meet once a week like a lot of clubs often do, in fact, they practice even harder than some. They’ll typically go beyond and do club meetings twice a week with individual practices in between. All together, this makes them very prepared for competitions.
“We just have two meetings a week, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Sophomore Jaelyn Dill said.
Even though they work hard, they still manage to create an exciting yet relaxing atmosphere that’s nice to work in.
“I think it’s fun, it needs to be covered more. It’s really relaxing and it’s just another fun thing to do. Not a lot of people know Kickapoo even has an archery team, but we only have 20 people, so it’s kind of small,” Dill said.
Archery is also a very versatile sport when it comes to its workflow. Archers don’t have to worry too much about the outside world or their responsibilities in the sport when they enter the shooting range.
“With Archery, the season is very short and it’s really flexible. There have been times where I go to shoot early and it still works, since it’s a very individual sport,” Senior Olivia Holloway said.
Even though there are practices and competitions crammed into such a small season, the players don’t feel that much of a pressure. Archery is a mixture of a sport and a hobby, something you don’t have to worry about too much.
“I’ve been in archery for all four years at Kickapoo. It’s very fun, and I think more people should join,” Holloway said.
Every club and sport is integral to our school’s foundation and deserves recognition, no matter how small or unknown. It becomes especially important when it’s a club so near and dear to many student’s hearts. It’s important to acknowledge the creative and hardworking individuals that do archery at our school.
