Harman’s our sports professional in room 201 and without him it would be a hot mess sports express. (Harman is pictured on the left, his friend is sat next to him on the right.)

Our sports section of the Kickapoo High Quarterly (KHQ) has always been a hit, but because it is so popular, it needs an editor with a special skill set to take care of it. Introducing sports editor junior Cayden Harman! Harman has been a member of the KHQ since the start of the 2023-2024 school year but was part of the yearbook team his sophomore year.

“The thing that got me interested in Journalism was basketball. I know it seems that most things about me connect back to that, but it’s true. I was watching the 2020 NBA Finals, which coincided with my discovery of sports social media. I saw sports personalities such as Stephen A. Smith, Walt Frazier, Mike Breen, and Skip Bayless as inspirations, which drew me into journalism,” Harman said.

He is always out and about getting an interview for an article or has his camera ready to get a good photo. Harman is one of the most calm people on staff, but his articles are written to a ‘T.’

“My favorite part of being on staff is the unique personalities. It takes a certain type of person to take on the challenge of making a magazine. We have everybody, from calm tempered, well mannered, all the way up to loud and boisterous. I also enjoy the relative freedom of choice on subjects. If you have the talents and passion to write the story you want, 9/10 times, you will be assigned to write it,” Harman said.

In his free time, he likes to play video games, photograph, hike, play basketball, exercise, and stay up to date with the news are just a few of Harman’s hobbies. While he might be a junior, he still has his senior year and college to look up to.

“My future holds something in sports coaching or journalism. Coaching for a high school, college, or professional organization is a dream of mine. Following the role of Stephen A Smith as a Sports writer or a sports media position would be amazing as well. A career in broadcast is also something I am interested in. In terms of college, whoever pushes me into debt the least will likely get my talents,” Harman said.

While on staff, Harman will contribute to roughly 13 to 14 KHQ online and print issues. Journalists like to say they don’t have a favorite story they’ve written, but deep down, they do. For Harman, it is an article about sports betting that was published in the third issue.

“The betting story coming out this issue for sure. I had to rework it a lot to make it something that both readers and so would both enjoy. It was a real passion project for me. Sometimes the best thing to do with a story is to look it over as an almost unrecognizable being and take the perspective of a complete stranger. The end product is something that I am proud of,” Harman said.

He has come a long way from switching from yearbook to magazine, and we love having him on staff. The KHQ is excited to see what will happen during his senior year journey!
