It sounds ridiculous, the idea of going to school all year round. However, the benefits are shocking.
10 percent of schools in the U.S. base their school schedule on what they call the 45/ 15 ratio. This represents 45 days in school and 15 days off. This would occur around four times a year.
Having this routine schedule prevents student-teacher burnout. 15 days in between also allows for a break or even for students to catch up on any studies or assignments they have not yet completed.
Students would still receive their normally scheduled holiday breaks as well. Including Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and of course Fourth of July.
The downside of this is unfortunately shorter summers. However, you would still have your 15-day break, as well as the weekends. As for many students taking online classes, it would also allow more time for vacations or even just a break to warm up in the sun.
The academic benefits are also important. Studies on USNEWS show that 45 percent of student test scores decline after they come back from our almost three-month break during the summer. Schools that have applied the 45/15 ratio into their calendar only showed a decline of 15 percent.
Applying this calendar to our school system would allow for less transportation confusion, parents would not have to stress about finding child care all summer, and students would earn a much more advanced education.
