Behind any standing ovation is someone who pours their heart into every rehearsal and performance. For junior Betsy Cybulski, the lead in our school’s spring musical, the stage is the finish line to a long journey of hard work and dedication.
Cybulski has been on stage for over a decade. She performed in her first show when she was just four years old and fell in love with theater.
“It was a great way for little me to get my energy out by singing and dancing, and have a ton of fun while learning things at the same time,” Cybulski said.
Cybulski has been in many different shows including “Calvin Berger,” “Mean Girls,” “School of Rock,” and she even landed the lead role in Springfield Little Theaters production of “The Wizard of Oz,”. Regardless of the show or role she is in, Cybulski always enjoys herself.

“I really like theater because it is a combination of all my interests,” Cybulski said.
This year, our school’s theater program is putting on a production of the show “Kiss Me Kate.” This 1940’s musical is a lively comedy showcasing multiple extravagant and chaotic characters.
“I like the show because nobody’s ever heard of it before, and it’ll be really fun,” Cybulski said.
This musical has multiple different elements that make the experience and storyline exciting. Cybulski is looking forward to the less conventional and more shocking scenes.
“People will definitely be surprised by what they see, for better or worse. I think everyone will like it,” Cybulski said.
The cast runs a very tight and busy schedule. Cybulski and the other cast members meet for rehearsal four days a week, with some days dedicated to blocking and choreography, and others set aside for working on vocals.
However, Cybulski enjoys her time spent in the theater and chooses to have fun regardless of the rigorous schedule.
“I really enjoy getting to dance with the featured dancers, especially in ‘Where Thine Thy Special Face,’” Cybulski said.
While Cybulski’s character, Lilli Vanessi, is a fiery and angry woman, Cybulski likes to make it fun by tuning into her character’s big personality.
“My character is very angry, which is a difference from backstage where we’re having fun the entire time,” Cybulski said.
The show will take the stage starting with our school’s matinee on Wednesday, March 11, then will be putting on shows the following three nights with another matinee on Saturday as well.
“People should come see “Kiss Me Kate” because you can get out of class and see a fun performance with your friends instead,” Cybulski said.

“I hope to see lots of people there. We’ve worked really hard and we’re excited to show everyone else!” Cybulski said.
