One of the most important events in a highschooler’s life is prom, so naturally, you want to make it count. Over the years, it has become a tradition for someone to “prompose” with a creative sign asking the other person to attend prom with them, turning a simple question into a big, thoughtful promposal.
Because of this, expectations are pretty high with some people. The sign has to be clever and personal, all while capturing the importance of your relationship. With so much pressure to make it perfect, a lot of people end up overthinking it or procrastinating altogether.
Don’t overthink it! It’s the thought that counts. Obviously put effort in, but just a simple sign and some treats are sure to make somebody’s day.
Food Themed
This one is probably one of the easiest on the list. You can choose your partner’s favorite candies or snacks, and make a sign based around it! Throwing in a cheesy food pun would also give both of you a laugh.
For example, if they love pizza, you could create a sign that asks, “I know this is cheesy… but will you go to prom with me?” Or, if they like tacos, you could make a sign that says, “Let’s taco ‘bout prom.”
It’s silly little ideas that may seem simple or corny, but really, they’re a cute way to ask your significant other out to prom, as long as you supply them with the snack to go with it!
The snack or food itself can even become part of the message. If you’re creative, but not necessarily in an arts-and-crafts way, baking might be a better fit. Instead of painting on a poster board and piling on decorations, consider spelling out the question using cookies, cupcakes, donuts, or other favorite treats to create something both personal and delicious.
Movie & Show Themed
Maybe your partner isn’t really a snack person, but they absolutely love movies. If you know their favorite movie, a promposal sign should be easy.
This sign can be as simple or elaborate as you want it to be. The promposal could just be a poster board themed around your movie. For example, if they love the popular Pixar movie “Up,” your sign could say: “Are you Up for prom?”
It doesn’t just have to be a movie either; it could be an entire show your partner really enjoys. For example, if your significant other loves the show “Friends” you can make a sign titled, “The One Where We Go to Prom,” a clever play on the title format of every episode.
If you’re looking for a very elaborate promposal, you could act out a scene from their movie or show of choice with friends or your partner themselves. This takes a lot of planning, but it’s extremely sweet and thoughtful.
Treasure Hunt
Sometimes, a simple sign may not be enough. If your partner loves adventures and puzzles, then this idea may be perfect for them.
Write down a bunch of clues on notecards and scatter them somewhere for your partner to find. This could be in the school, their house, your favorite hangout spot, or all of those combined to make a true adventure!
All the clues should lead to different locations where they’ll pick up another card. Think of inside jokes you have with your partner, or places that mean a lot to your specific relationship. For example, maybe a card leads to the spot where you two had your first kiss, or went on your first date.
The scavenging and hunting should lead to the grand finale: the promposal sign. At this point, the sign can be simple. A heartfelt letter, a bouquet of flowers, or a box of chocolates should earn you that “yes.”
Including Friends
This one is short, sweet, and simple! As long as you have a few friends, at least four or five, you can make a fun group promposal.
Outside their house or where they can see clearly, have your friends line up side-by-side. They can either be holding handmade signs with letters, or they go all out, dressed up as the letter themselves. Either way, they should spell out the same thing when lined up: “prom?”
It’s a slightly elevated way to ask your partner to prom. It can be as theatrical as you want, and can even fit into the movie category if it’s themed right.
